Instagram API Publishing Limits Explained (2026)
Scott Fensome4 min read
Meta's content publishing guide says an Instagram account can publish 100 posts through the API in a rolling 24 hours, with a carousel counting as one post. Its carousel section says 50, and the reference page for the limit endpoint says the quota is "currently 50", so the docs contradict each other. Query the endpoint for your own account rather than trusting either number.
The publishing limit, and why the docs disagree
| Meta page | What it says |
|---|---|
| Content Publishing guide | 100 API published posts per 24 hour moving period |
| Same guide, carousel section | Accounts are limited to 50 published posts in 24 hours |
| content_publishing_limit reference | quota_total is "currently 50" |
The limit is enforced on the media_publish call, not when you upload. On our own accounts in October 2026, the content_publishing_limit endpoint reported a quota of 100 per 24 hours. Your account may differ, which is the point of checking.
How to check your quota
Call GET /{ig_user_id}/content_publishing_limit.
- quota_usage is returned by default: how many times the account has published in the last 24 hours, or since the time you pass in the since parameter.
- config (request it with the fields parameter) contains quota_total, the maximum, and quota_duration, the period in seconds.
With Instagram Login you need instagram_business_basic and instagram_business_content_publish. With Facebook Login you need instagram_basic, instagram_content_publish and pages_read_engagement, plus ads_management or ads_read if the user's Page role came through Business Manager.
Other limits that catch people out
- Containers: 400 created per account per rolling 24 hours. A container is the uploaded but unpublished media.
- Container expiry: a container not published within 24 hours expires. That is why Instagram has no real "schedule for later" in the API; the app must publish at the time.
- Processing: video uploads are asynchronous. Wait until status_code is FINISHED before publishing.
- Call volume: separately, Meta's Business Use Case rate limit for the Instagram Platform is 4800 multiplied by the number of impressions in the last 24 hours. Hitting it returns error 80002.
Reels rules through the API
From Meta's IG User Media reference:
| Setting | Limit |
|---|---|
| Length | 3 seconds to 15 minutes |
| File size | 300 MB |
| Container | MOV or MP4, moov atom at the front, no edit lists |
| Video codec | HEVC or H.264, progressive, closed GOP, 4:2:0 |
| Frame rate | 23 to 60 fps |
| Width | 1920 pixels maximum |
| Aspect ratio | 0.01:1 to 10:1, 9:16 recommended |
| Video bitrate | 25 Mbps maximum, VBR |
| Audio | AAC, 48 kHz maximum, mono or stereo, 128 kbps |
| Caption | 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags, 20 @ tags |
| Cover image | JPEG, 8 MB maximum, sRGB |
Collaborators (up to three usernames) are only available with Facebook Login. Count your caption before you upload with the caption counter, and see caption length limits for other platforms.
Account requirements
The API only works with Instagram professional accounts, Business or Creator. With Facebook Login the account must be connected to a Facebook Page, and the user must be able to perform the MANAGE or CREATE_CONTENT task on it. If the Page requires Page Publishing Authorization, publishing fails until that is done. With Instagram Login no Page is needed.
See Business or Creator for the API and linking Instagram to a Facebook Page.
Limit vs sensible volume
A quota of 50 or 100 a day is a technical ceiling, not advice. Our brand new Facebook Page went quiet after a week of 25 to 30 Reels a day, so do not treat Instagram's higher number as a target either. More in daily limits for new accounts.
Reel Uploader applies its own daily limit per account on top of Meta's and posts one Reel at a time. If you are scheduling rather than building, start with how to schedule Instagram Reels or the guide to cross posting short videos.
Questions people ask
Is the Instagram API limit 50 or 100 posts a day?
Meta's own docs say both. The rate limit section of the content publishing guide says 100; its carousel section and the content_publishing_limit reference say 50. Our accounts reported 100 in October 2026. Check the endpoint for yours.
Does a carousel count as one post?
Yes. Meta says a carousel counts as a single post against the limit.
Can I schedule a Reel with the Instagram API?
Not directly. There is no publish time field, and containers expire after 24 hours, so your app must publish at the chosen time.
Do I need a Facebook Page to use the Instagram API?
Only with Facebook Login. Instagram Login works without a Page.
