Repurpose YouTube Shorts as Reels and Spotlight (2026)
Scott Fensome4 min read
Post the original file you exported from your editor, not a copy pulled back down from YouTube. YouTube Studio's download gives you an MP4 in only 720p or 360p, and Shorts can now run up to 3 minutes, which is longer than Facebook Reels or Snapchat Spotlight accept through their APIs.
Get those two things right and a YouTube Short can go to Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels and Snapchat with very little extra work.
Why not download your Short from YouTube Studio
YouTube does let you download your own uploads. In YouTube Studio, choose Content from the left panel, open the three dot menu on the video and select Download. But YouTube's help page sets limits:
- The file comes as an MP4 in either 720p or 360p, depending on the video size.
- You can download each video up to five times a day.
- Videos with a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, or that use a preapproved audio track, cannot be downloaded.
A 720p file is a step down from a 1080x1920 export. Instagram's ranking explainer names low resolution reels as ones it aims to show less, so starting from a reduced copy works against you. Keep your editor's master export and use it everywhere.
If the master is lost, the YouTube download is a workable fallback for a Short you need to rescue. Just check it in the tool on this page first.
Length: the limit that catches most Shorts
YouTube's help centre says videos uploaded on or after 15 October 2024 with a square or vertical aspect ratio, up to three minutes long, count as Shorts. The other platforms are stricter.
| Platform | Length accepted | Fits a 2 minute Short? |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Shorts | up to 3 minutes | Yes |
| Instagram Reels via API | 3 seconds to 15 minutes | Yes |
| Facebook Reels via API | 3 to 90 seconds | No |
| Snapchat Spotlight via API | 6 to 60 seconds | No |
| Snapchat Public Story via API | 5 to 60 seconds | No |
If your Short is over 60 seconds, you have two choices: post it only to YouTube and Instagram, or cut a 60 second version for the rest. Often the shorter cut is the better video anyway. See how to cut long videos into shorts and ideal Reel length by platform.
On Snapchat there is a money reason to stay above 30 seconds: Snapchat says Spotlight videos must be at least 30 seconds long to be eligible to earn revenue in its Monetization Program.
Square or vertical: check the frame
YouTube accepts square video as a Short. Instagram's API accepts aspect ratios between 0.01:1 and 10:1 but recommends 9:16, and Facebook's Reels API specifies 9:16. A square Short posted as a Reel ends up with space above and below, and Instagram names reels with borders as ones it aims to show less. Reframe square Shorts to 9:16 before posting elsewhere.
Step by step: one Short, four places
- Start from the master export at 1080x1920.
- Check the length. Over 90 seconds rules out Facebook Reels via the API; over 60 rules out Spotlight.
- Check the frame is 9:16 and text sits clear of the edges. See safe zones for Reels text.
- Check the audio. Music from YouTube's library or a licensed track in your edit may not be cleared for other platforms. If in doubt, replace it before posting elsewhere.
- Rewrite the caption for each app. YouTube titles do not carry over. Instagram's API allows 2,200 characters, Spotlight descriptions allow 160, and Meta's Facebook guidance favours no links and no more than five hashtags.
- Schedule, do not dump. Post one at a time across the week rather than your whole Shorts back catalogue on day one.
Is reposting your own Shorts on Instagram a problem?
Not if it is your own content and has no other app's branding on it. Meta's July 2025 guidance on unoriginal content targets reposting other creators' work, and it says you can share the same content across your own Pages and profiles. The things to avoid are watermarks, borders and low resolution copies. The full detail is in the cross posting penalty explained.
Reel Uploader does not post to YouTube, but it takes the same file you uploaded to Shorts and schedules it to Instagram Reels and Facebook Reels, with Snapchat to follow once Snap approves the app. The wider workflow is in the cross posting guide.
Questions people ask
Can I post my YouTube Shorts on Instagram Reels?
Yes. Use the original file, keep it 9:16, and remove anything that shows YouTube branding. Instagram's API accepts Reels from 3 seconds to 15 minutes.
Why won't my 2 minute Short upload as a Facebook Reel?
Meta's Reels Publishing API accepts 3 to 90 seconds. Trim it or post a cut down version.
What quality does YouTube Studio download my Short in?
An MP4 in 720p or 360p, depending on the video size, according to YouTube's help centre.
Do Shorts over one minute have any extra risk?
On YouTube, yes. YouTube says a Short over one minute with an active copyright claim of any type is blocked globally until the claim is resolved.
