Safe Zones for Reels Text: Keep Captions Visible (2026)
Scott Fensome4 min read
Meta's guidance for Reels is to leave at least 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% on each side free of text, logos and other key elements. Snapchat's equivalent is to keep the top 150 pixels and bottom 330 pixels of the canvas clear. On a 1080x1920 frame, a box about 950 pixels wide and 980 pixels tall, starting about 270 pixels from the top, sits inside both.
Both sets of numbers are published for ads, not organic posts. Neither Meta nor Snap publishes a separate safe zone for ordinary Reels or Spotlights, but the same buttons, usernames and captions cover organic videos, so the ad guidance is the best official reference there is.
Safe zone numbers by platform
| Platform | Top | Bottom | Sides | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram and Facebook Reels (Meta) | 14% | 35% | 6% each side | Meta Ads Guide, Instagram Reels |
| Snapchat (Single Image or Video ads) | 150px | 330px | Not given in pixels | Snapchat Business Help |
On a 1080x1920 frame, Meta's percentages work out to:
- Top: about 269 pixels
- Bottom: 672 pixels
- Each side: about 65 pixels
That leaves a safe area about 950 pixels wide, from 269 pixels down to 1248 pixels down. Snap's margins on the same frame leave everything from 150 pixels down to 1590 pixels down. Meta's zone is the stricter of the two at the top and bottom, so if you design to Meta's numbers you're inside Snapchat's too.
Why the bottom margin is so large
Meta explains its guidance in two parts. First, the profile icon, caption and call to action buttons sit over the lower part of the video. Second, on devices with screens taller than 9:16, Meta may zoom the video to fill the screen, which crops anything outside the safe zone, or show it at 9:16 with black bars.
Snap's reasoning is the same: its brand name, headline, call to action and progress bar overlap the edges. Snap's current safe zones page says it uses one safe zone spec across Stories, Spotlight and Commercials, and lists the Ads Manager safe zone toggle as the way to check alignment.
Where to put text on a Reel
For a 1080x1920 video going to Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat:
- Titles and hooks: in the upper middle third, below about 270 pixels from the top.
- Subtitles: above about 1250 pixels from the top, not along the bottom edge where TV style subtitles usually go. This is the one people get wrong most.
- Logos: inside the 6% side margins, not tucked into a corner.
- Faces and products: centred, so a slight zoom on a tall phone doesn't crop them.
Burned in subtitles placed where a TV subtitle would sit land in Meta's bottom 35%, which is exactly the area its guidance says the profile icon and call to action cover.
Checking your safe zone
- In Meta Ads Manager you can turn on the Safe Zone guardrail, which shows the safe area as a yellow overlay on your creative.
- Snapchat has a Safe Zone toggle in Ads Manager for ad creative.
- For organic posts, the simplest test is to upload a draft privately or to a test account and look at it on a phone before scheduling it everywhere.
You can also run your file through the video checker to confirm it is 9:16 at 1080x1920 before you start placing text. If the frame isn't 9:16 to begin with, every percentage above moves.
Safe zones and cross posting
A safe zone only works if the video isn't reframed afterwards. If a platform crops or letterboxes a file because the aspect ratio is wrong, text that was safe ends up off screen or shrunk. The full export settings are in video specs for Reels and Spotlight.
Snapchat Stories have no caption field when posted by API, so any words you need on a Story have to be in the video and inside these margins. More on that in caption length limits. If you're getting one video ready for every platform, the complete cross posting guide and the Reel posting checklist cover the steps in order.
Questions people ask
What is the safe zone for Instagram Reels?
Meta's guidance is to keep at least 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side free of text and logos.
Is the safe zone the same for Facebook Reels?
Meta publishes one Safe Zone guidance for ads in Stories and Reels across Facebook and Instagram, so use the same margins.
What is the Snapchat safe zone in pixels?
Snap says to keep the top 150 pixels and bottom 330 pixels clear on Single Image or Video ads.
Do safe zones apply to organic posts?
Neither Meta nor Snap publishes a separate organic safe zone. The ad guidance is the closest official reference, because the same interface sits over organic videos.
