Ideal Reel Length by Platform: What Works (2026)
Scott Fensome4 min read
If one video is going to Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels and Snapchat Spotlight, make it between 30 and 60 seconds. That fits every platform's API limits, clears Snapchat's 30 second minimum for Spotlight earnings, and sits in the range where the largest recent Reels study found the highest engagement.
None of the three platforms publishes an "ideal" length. What they publish are limits and a few rules about what gets recommended. The best length comes from combining those with what the video actually contains.
Length limits and reach rules by platform
| Platform | Allowed length | Rule that affects reach or earnings |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram Reels | Up to 20 minutes in the app, 3 seconds to 15 minutes by API | Over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences. Boosting needs 90 seconds or less |
| Facebook Reels | Any length in the app, 3 to 90 seconds by API | No length rule published |
| Snapchat Spotlight | 5 seconds minimum in the app, 6 to 60 seconds by API | Must be at least 30 seconds to earn revenue |
| Snapchat Stories | 5 to 60 seconds by web uploader and API | No length rule published |
The detailed rules are in Instagram Reels length limits, Facebook Reels specs and Snapchat Spotlight requirements.
Ideal Instagram Reel length
Instagram's hard line is 3 minutes. Its help centre says Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences, so anything longer mostly reaches existing followers.
For what performs inside that limit, the biggest dataset I found is Socialinsider's analysis of 6 million Reels from brand accounts, published in July 2026 and covering January to June 2026:
| Length | Engagement rate |
|---|---|
| 0 to 30 seconds | 0.28% |
| 30 to 45 seconds | 0.30% |
| 45 to 60 seconds | 0.35% |
| 60 to 90 seconds | 0.30% |
| 90 to 120 seconds | 0.30% |
| 120 to 180 seconds | 0.33% |
| Over 180 seconds | 0.15% |
Two things to read into that carefully. It's a third party study of brand accounts, not Instagram data, and the article doesn't say how engagement was calculated. And apart from the drop after 3 minutes, the differences are small. Length alone isn't deciding much below 3 minutes.
If you might boost the Reel later, keep it to 90 seconds, because that is Instagram's limit for boosting.
Ideal Facebook Reel length
Meta says Facebook Reels can be any length, and it hasn't published a recommendation rule like Instagram's 3 minutes. I couldn't find a credible study specific to Facebook Reels length either, so I won't quote one.
The practical limit is the API. If a scheduler is posting for you, Facebook Reels must be 3 to 90 seconds. Anything longer has to go up by hand.
Ideal Snapchat Spotlight length
By API, Spotlight takes 6 to 60 seconds. If you want Spotlight to pay, Snapchat's monetisation rules say Spotlight videos must be at least 30 seconds long to be eligible for revenue. That makes 30 to 60 seconds the sensible window for Spotlight if you post through a tool.
Snap's advice for ads is much shorter: its business help suggests ads of 3 to 5 seconds often drive action, and recommends keeping ads around 5 to 6 seconds. That is guidance for paid Snap Ads, not organic Spotlight, so don't apply it to Spotlight posts, which have a 5 second minimum in the app and 6 seconds by API anyway.
What the content tells you
The limits give you a window. The footage decides where in it you land.
When I cut Shorts out of my daily vlogs, I found most moments only hold their subject for about ten seconds. Tight 30 to 40 second cuts beat the same material padded out to 60.
So my rule is: start from the moment, cut it as tight as it will go, and only then check it against the limits. If it lands at 25 seconds and you want Spotlight revenue, find five more seconds of real content or accept it won't earn. Don't stretch it. There's more on finding those moments in cutting long videos into Shorts.
One length for cross posting
If you want a single file for all four destinations:
- Keep it between 30 and 60 seconds.
- Check the exact duration before scheduling. A clip at 60.4 seconds is over Snapchat's 60 second API limit. Run it through the video checker first.
- Put the hook in the first seconds, since all three feeds let people swipe away instantly.
If the video has to be longer than 60 seconds, it won't go to Snapchat by API, and over 90 seconds it won't go to Facebook by API. At that point you're posting different cuts for different platforms, which the cross posting guide covers.
Questions people ask
What is the best length for Instagram Reels?
Instagram doesn't publish one. Socialinsider's 2026 study of 6 million brand Reels found 45 to 60 seconds had the highest engagement rate, and engagement roughly halved past 3 minutes.
Are shorter Reels better?
Not automatically. In the Socialinsider data, Reels under 30 seconds had the lowest engagement rate of any band below 3 minutes.
How long should a Snapchat Spotlight be?
At least 30 seconds if you want it to be eligible for revenue, and no more than 60 seconds if you post through the API.
Is there a best length for Facebook Reels?
Meta hasn't published one. Keep to 90 seconds or less if you schedule through a tool, as that is the API limit.
