Instagram Reels Length Limits: App vs API (2026)
Scott Fensome5 min read
Instagram lets you record and edit Reels up to 20 minutes long in the app, but Instagram's own help page says Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences. If you publish through the API instead, the limit is 3 seconds minimum and 15 minutes maximum.
So there are really three numbers that matter: what the app accepts, what the API accepts, and what Instagram will actually push to people who don't follow you.
Instagram Reels maximum length at a glance
| Where you post from | Minimum | Maximum | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram app (record and edit) | Not stated | 20 minutes | Instagram Help Centre |
| Content Publishing API | 3 seconds | 15 minutes | Meta developer docs |
| Recommended to non followers | Not stated | 3 minutes | Instagram Help Centre |
| Boosting a Reel as an ad | Not stated | 90 seconds | Instagram Help Centre |
One oddity: the Instagram help page for recording a reel still carries a page summary saying "up to 3 minutes", while the article text itself says 20 minutes. The body text is the newer statement, so treat 20 minutes as the app limit and 3 minutes as the recommendation ceiling.
How long can a Reel be in the app?
Instagram's help centre says you can record one or several clips that add up to 20 minutes, and a progress bar at the top shows how long you've recorded. You can add effects, music or your own original audio.
The same page carries a plain note: Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences. Your followers can still see a longer Reel, but you lose the main reason most people post Reels, which is reach beyond your existing audience.
How the 3 minute recommendation limit came about
In January 2025 Instagram announced that creators in the United States could publish Reels up to 3 minutes in the Reels editor. In the same post it said that previously only Reels up to 90 seconds were eligible for recommendation, and that Reels up to 3 minutes could now reach non followers.
That announcement was framed as a US change. Instagram's help centre now states the 3 minute recommendation rule without a country caveat, but Instagram has not published a list of regions, so if you are outside the US and something looks different on your account, that may be why.
Instagram Reels length limit via the API
If a scheduler or your own app publishes for you, Meta's IG User Media reference sets the Reels rules:
- Duration: 3 seconds minimum, 15 minutes maximum
- File size: 300MB maximum
- Container: MOV or MP4, with the moov atom at the front of the file
- Frame rate: 23 to 60 FPS
- Aspect ratio: anything between 0.01:1 and 10:1 is accepted, but Meta recommends 9:16 to avoid cropping or blank space
Meta's guide also limits accounts to 100 API published posts in a rolling 24 hours, though its carousel section and the limit endpoint reference say 50. When I checked the content_publishing_limit endpoint on our own accounts in October 2026 it reported 100. More on this in Instagram API publishing limits.
The full encoding list (codecs, bitrate, audio) is in our video specs for Reels and Spotlight breakdown.
Boosted Reels have a stricter limit
To boost a Reel, Instagram requires it to be 90 seconds or less and in a full screen 9:16 vertical format. If there is any chance you will put money behind a Reel later, keep it to 90 seconds from the start. Cutting it down after it has picked up likes means posting a new Reel.
What length actually performs?
The official limits tell you what is allowed, not what works. The best independent data I found is a Socialinsider analysis of 6 million Reels from brand accounts active between January and June 2026. Their engagement rates by length were:
| Reel length | Engagement rate (Socialinsider) |
|---|---|
| 0 to 30 seconds | 0.28% |
| 30 to 45 seconds | 0.30% |
| 45 to 60 seconds | 0.35% |
| 60 to 90 seconds | 0.30% |
| 90 to 120 seconds | 0.30% |
| 120 to 180 seconds | 0.33% |
| Over 180 seconds | 0.15% |
That is a third party study of brand accounts, not an Instagram figure, and the article does not explain how it calculated engagement. The useful takeaway is the cliff after 3 minutes, which lines up with Instagram's own recommendation rule.
My own experience cutting short clips out of daily vlogs points the same way from a different angle: most moments only hold their subject for about ten seconds, so a tight 30 to 40 second cut beat padding a clip out to 60. Length should follow the moment, not the limit. There is more on this in ideal Reel length by platform.
Posting the same video to other platforms
If the same clip is going to Facebook and Snapchat as well, Instagram's limits are the loosest of the three. Facebook's Reels API stops at 90 seconds and Snapchat's Spotlight API at 60 seconds. If you want one file that works everywhere, keep it under 60 seconds. The guide to cross posting short videos covers the full picture.
Before you upload, you can run the file through the video checker to see its duration, resolution and file size against each platform.
Questions people ask
Can Instagram Reels be longer than 90 seconds?
Yes. The app allows up to 20 minutes and the API up to 15 minutes. Only boosted Reels are held to 90 seconds.
Why is my long Reel getting fewer views?
If it runs over 3 minutes, Instagram says it won't be recommended to new audiences, so it mostly reaches people who already follow you.
What is the shortest Reel I can post?
Through the API the minimum is 3 seconds. Instagram's help centre does not state a minimum for the app.
Do Reels uploaded from my camera roll have a different limit?
Instagram's help centre does not publish a separate figure for camera roll uploads, so I can't give you one. The 20 minute figure is stated for recording and editing in the Reels camera.
